Hi Everyone,

One of the really key things I’ve found that has really made all the difference with my weightloss is exercise. However when you are very overweight it is really hard to get started. I was really put off going to a gym as I thought I would be the only frumpy one there and was really self-conscious about this, plus I felt really lethargic and got out of breath just walking up a few stairs. In that case joining a gym and undertaking a few classes was really too much to contemplate. Here are a few tips on how I got myself started, in the order which I did them.  Hope you find it useful :)

1. Start slow – try and work up your activity level at your own pace. For example putting a bit more oomph into doing the housework or go for a walk round the shops each day.

2. Try and incorporate some activity into your everyday life – like cycling or walking to work rather than driving/taking the bus. I actually found it faster, more convenient and cheaper to cycle than take the bus, you burn loads of calories and its a nice way to wake you up in the mornings! Also I’ve found it great fun to take the bikes out on a nice day and explore the local area, take a picnic with you and make a day of it.

3. When you’re ready, join a gym! I found a really nice gym with a lot of people trying to lose weight like me and have made loads of friends – you really have to try it! Also remember to start slow, by walking on the treadmill at first, then when you’re ready join a class you can cope with and steadily work your way up the intensity and length of classes. You don’t have to be able to run a mile straight away!

4. Continue to challenge yourself - its easy to slip into old habits and just cruise a long at a new baseline of activity, but always challenge yourself if its getting too easy. For example walking/cycling faster or further, taking up a new hobby like  a sport, mountain walking or even jogging when you feel up to it!

5. Just go for it! Don’t worry about it, just do it and don’t let yourself make excuses. It’ll be the best and most fun thing you’ve ever done – trust me!

Hi!
I thought I would introduce myself.  I’m Sarah a 25 year old PhD Student in Nottingham, UK.  I’m currently working to achieve a healthy weight and have been an avid user of ShapeUp Club for nearly 5 months now.  I’ve found it so useful to count my calories, check that my meals are balanced at the end of each day and log my exercise against my calorie intake.  I also love the graph function, its really motivating to see your weight go down week after week.  Using this app I’ve gone from 107kgs to 89kgs (at 161cms tall) in 4 months.  So, half way there! Wahey!
I’m going to be telling you about the stuff I’m doing to lose weight and the new challenges I’m setting myself (jogging in the 5km race for life for instance, eeeek!) and how I’m getting along with it all.
I want to show myself and other people that you can lose a lot of weight, feel great for it and, surprise surprise, actually enjoy doing it!  Please feel free to write in with your own experiences, I’d love to hear about them.

Sarah.
