![]() Hello everyone!!
Vegetarianism
It’s important to note first that being a vegetarian is way of living. Most vegetarians didn’t decide: “today I will become a vegetarian”, they started a long time ago. Some of them didn’t really like meat, or consider that meat was not the best for them. Some other have other reasons like religion or political views. Anyway, some other started as part of a nutrition regime to lose weight or to treat certain health condition. Vegetarianism is the practice of following a plant-based diet (as Wikipedia says), but within the term there are different types of vegetarians.
Semi or Partial vegetarian: Their diet is based on plant foods, but occasionally includes fish and chicken, and animal related products such as eggs and diary. Red meat is completely off dialy intake. Lacto-ovo-vegetarian: They mostly eat plant foods but also include diary and eggs in their regular intake. Meat, all kind of it (chicken, fish and other) is avoided. Lacto- vegetarian: They may consume some or all diary products. Their diet is based on plant foods. According to some vegetarian organizations, people holding this diet plans are not vegetarian, and the only kind of vegetarian that they consider is: Vegan: Their diet is strictly and exclusively based on plant foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, and other non animal products. Diet
A vegetarian diet can provide good nutrition if it is properly planned. Children and adolescents can have a vegetarian diet, but foods have to be carefully chosen in order to obtain all nutrients required by their growing bodies. It is very important to supply all nutrients delivered by animal produce. Vitamin B, for example, is mostly found in animal products like meat, poultry, eggs and diary. This nutrient is very important for our nervous system as well as our body’s metabolism. Vegetarians must include this nutrient through vitamin supplements. Another nutrient that has to be ingested through vitamin supplements is vitamin D. Our body “makes” this nutrient from sunlight but it is mostly found in fish and diary.
Zinc and iron are also fundamental to our bodies. This nutrients are found in high protein foods like meat, eggs, fish, poultry and diary, they are also found in vegetables and fruits bout they are not the same. Zinc coming from vegetables and fruits it’s not as available for our body to use, so it’s very important include nuts and legumes the diet, daily. Iron coming from vegetables, fruits, seeds legumes and grains are harder for the body to absorb, than iron coming from animal produce. Vegans should increase ingestion of dark leafy greens and vitamin c to increase iron absorption.
Finally, ingest of protein, a basic nutrient to our body -the one that gives us a shape and a structure-, might be compromised by diet without animal products. Animal protein is considered a complete protein, and only soybean protein is consider as complete from non-animal foods. This foods contain incomplete proteins and must be combined to get complete proteins. Beans, peas, nuts, seeds, and grains are a very important source of non-animal protein for vegetarians.
On my next topic I will talk about being a vegetarian. Their stories; what does it mean to be a vegetarian and how hard (or easy) it is to be a vegetarian in a cultural and a family context. If you are a vegetarian, you are so welcome to share your own experience!!! Until next time!!!

![]() Today, I will talk about disorders not necessarily related to eating, but to stay fit: bigorexia and orthorexia. Bigorexia Basically, this disorder is known to be like an inverse anorexia. In anorexia, people, mostly women, try to look smaller, thinner. In bigorexia, people, mostly men, try to look bigger, more muscular. Bigorexia happens more often among body-builders, so as anorexia is more common among models and show related people like actresses or dancers. This disorder is not considered an illness itself. Among medical community, is placed within the Body Dysmorphic Disorder category. Body dysmorphic disorder happens when a person doesn’t like their body and become obsessed with those defects they have. These defects might be real or imaginary, but they cause so much anxiety to the person that, he or she will do anything, in his or her power, to change them.
It’s true that, some men would work out a bit harder to show off some muscle at the beach on spring or summer. There is nothing wrong with having a built body. People with bigorexia will never reach that goal, because no shape is enough to fill their ideal of the body they want. In order to achieve the goal of their desired body, they may even abuse of drugs, like anabolic steroids, to increase their muscular mass. This may lead to other problems like muscle, liver and heart damage and/or failure. Or over-exercising, exceeding their body capacities, causing injuries and an extra consumption of calories that may unbalance their bodies. This in not, necessarily, an eating disorder. People with this problem might restrict their diets to a hazardous point, but I would consider it more like a fitness problem, because eating is not the main concern of this disorder. It’s important to make a difference between someone who over exercises to lose weight and someone with bigorexia, who exercises to gain muscle mass. Bulimics, for example, may over-exercise to lose all calories gained at a binge episode. This situation is related to food intake; that’s why bulimia is considered an eating disorder. It’s important to note that, a person with an eating disorder does not necessarily have body dysmorphic disorder. Orthorexia Another disorder, not so common and a lot newer than any of the ones I have already described, is orthorexia. Some researchers and physicians don’t think this could be considered a disorder. It, basically, consists of eating ‘over-healthy’. When I first heard about it, I thought: “what is the problem of being extremely healthy?” The problem with orthorexia is that is not healthy at all. People with this disorder think they are eating healthy by eating, only, certain foods. Progressively, their diet gets very restricted to only certain nutrients. When someone decides to become a vegetarian, for example, they need to supply the lack of meat nutrients with other sources of these nutrients, and eventually do so. They can have a very healthy and nutritious diet. When a person is orthorexic, they don’t supply the missing nutrients in their restricted intake and this can lead to undernourishment. Being orthorexic goes far beyond preferring raw, organic food or non-animal products. People with this disorder get so obsessed with healthy food, that they get to think everything is hazardous to their health and start avoiding foods containing vitamins and other important substances. This disorder can be a predecessor of anorexia and it is important to detect early signs. There are certain things that we might consider not so good to our body, but we need them o might not be that bad. For example, recent studies show that caffeine is a protection factor against Parkinson’s disease and may decrease symptoms of migraine. Coffee and chocolate have caffeine, as well as many antioxidants that prevent premature aging and aging related impairments. The important thing is to have a balanced diet and NEVER abuse of any kind of food. ………………………………………………………. Well, after these past four entries I have given you a brief description of most common fitness disorders. It is important to note that they are more common than we may think. They are very hazardous to our health because they compromise the energy intake that our organs need to function properly. These disorders are considered to be psychiatric. Unlike type II diabetes or hypertension, that are considered metabolic syndromes related to a poor way of life, fitness disorders have to be treated differently than just medication and a change in our diet. It is important to identify them on time to avoid further problems. If you notice that you are very unhappy with your body, even if there is a real reason like being 10% heavier than your recommended weight, ask for help. Talk to your physician and tell him or her, which are your worries. He or she will provide you with the advice you need. Considering psychological therapy is a great option too. It’s never too much having someone to talk about these specific concerns that affect you and that you just don’t feel like sharing with someone else. Plus, a psychologist, as a health care provider has to be familiar with fitness related issues and be able to provide professional guidance. I have worked coaching people to achieve a healthy weight in a healthy way. So you can ask your therapist to help you design strategies, so you can reach you goals and feel better about yourself. ………………………………………………………………………. Thank you for your patience! I know it’s annoying to see the same old post every week. I will try to write more often, even just a few, but useful, lines. I really hope you had found this information useful and if you have any specific concerns feel free to ask. In later posts I will talk about drugs to lose weight and different lifestyles like becoming vegetarian. I you have any idea for a topic be my guest to suggest!!! ——————————————————- Ps.- Thank you Sarah for your comment and for following my blog. Your question is very interesting and important because guilty feelings are the worst in compulsive overeating. I will first recommend to talk to a health professional. Keep always in mind that a treat every now and then, is very important when trying to lose weight. People who has some treats, lose more weight than those who strictly follow a diet. Plan a day when you can have a treat. And always think than you deserve it. I think that there are two main strategies to overcome guilt. First you have to accept you did it. You have to admit, even out loud, that you just ate something you shouldn’t and tell yourself “I ate more than I should… so what?!” Sometimes, we regret it so much that we keep in our mind the thought: “I wish I wouldn’t have done that”, “I’m very sorry I did that” and we don’t give ourselves time to admit we had a step back. Apologizing won’t undo what is already done. The next thing to do is planning. I consider that planning and discipline are very important in every aspect of life. If you anticipatingly plan when to have these treats, you won’t feel bad about having them at all!! In case of compulsive over-eating, we should think: “Ok, I admit I did it, and it won’t affect me because I’m already taking actions to keep it from happening again (or to go back to my lifestyle)”. This actions may include, (as you might already know): having more healthy snacks ready at home, having 6 healthy meals ready to eat during the day, setting an alarm to respect every scheduled times for meals, identifying when exactly did you have a binge episode and even keeping a diary of them, so next time you will avoid that situation. Don’t even think about exercising more or eat less the next day. What is done is done. Those calories are already in your body and trying to get rid of them immediately it’s not different from thinking “I’m so sorry I did it, I don’t have control over myself”. You do have control, so much that you can have the commitment that it won’t happen again. This helped me a lot and it’s theoretically and empirically supported. Has been useful with aggressive people, so I think this might help you too! Have a beautiful week!!

![]() Hello!! I’m sorry I haven’t post in a while. I took a moment for myself after finishing school, and to prepare my thesis research project. After all this holidays that in Mexico start at December 12th and end at February 2nd, I gain (as well as many people I know Compulsive Overeating (COD) and Binge Eating Disorder (BED). Compulsive overeating and binge eating disorders are similar but not the same. There has been a debate about which are the main differences since many definitions of each disorders include any of both terms to refer to eat beyond necessary, uncontrollably.
In both disorders, the person eats a lot, even when not hungry and has weight fluctuations, often remains overweight or becomes obese. They are aware that that they have an abnormal eating behavior, but often doesn’t know what causes it. These people often try to start a diet, but usually withdrawals from it due to poor self-control over his or her eating behavior. These disorders are very common and very dangerous because they can lead to a large number of other long term problems like obesity, hypertension and diabetes. According to some statistics, these disorders are the most common in certain parts of the planet, specially developed countries where anxiety and depression are also common public health problems. Another characteristic is that people usually eats alone and hide food. This condition appears more COD than in BED. Sometimes, they eat little in public and tend to eat more when alone. Someone with COD can have a binge episode. A binge episode is when a person eats a very large amount of food, very rapidly and totally losing control of his or her behavior. Under these circumstances, the person can feel sick, dizzy or even pass out after the episode. These episodes, as well as regular compulsive overeating, often occur while performing other activities like watching T.V. The main difference between these disorders is that people with COD usually thinks a lot about food. They fantasize about eating and even plan how are they going to eat the food. They can’t wait to be eating certain food (like pasta or milk, for example) and may have withdrawal symptoms (as if food was some kind of drug; they actually crave for it).
A person with COD eats large amounts of food during the day; they eat continuously, even small quantities at a time, while a person with BED eats a very large amount of food, very quickly, through episodes that can be one or several during the day, and last little. Usually in both diseases, after an episode, the person feels guilt and remorse, but different from bulimia, they don’t purge or do anything else to redeem themselves. To diagnose COD or BED, the person must have at least two episodes per week during the past three months. COD and BED have been related to emotions. Many authors and researchers support that these are triggered by certain feelings as sadness, anger, boredom and even happiness. There seems to be a relationship between ever been depressed and have one of these disorders. In my personal experience, as a psychologist and as a sufferer of COD in recovering, I can tell that, most of times, these disorders are a symptom of something else; probably another emotional problem that has to be treated first. Some authors call them an expression disorder because its appearance reveals a deeper issue.
A normal human being may have some of these episodes at any point of their lives, or have a period in which we just can’t stop eating, without having a disorder (not met diagnosis criteria). One tip to avoid overeating is to enjoy food. If you like food, then love it!! Feel all flavors, textures, aromas and colors. Give small bites and chew many times. Keep potions small and stick to your choice of food. Try this exercise a few times a week and then try it at least once a day (just like an exercise program) and then, without even noticing it, you’ll be doing it regularly, losing pounds, enjoying food, guilt and remorse free! Another tip is to avoid hunger, eat five times a day, three main meals and have two snacks in order to feel fulfilled all day long and forget about eating more than you need. Try to keep healthy habits like avoiding carbonate sugar drinks, as well as junk food and unhealthy snacks at home and keep stress away by exercising. If you like chocolate cake, don’t forbid it! Having a treat every now and then won’t do any harm. Just, don’t buy the entire cake, just the split you will eat and enjoy it as it were the last one you will ever have. You can even have a junk food day and have a treat, with caution, only on this day. Always remember that there is no bad food, just bad eaters. Don’t classify food as good or bad; just make smart choices advised by a nutritionist.
The most important part of the treatment is to accept the problem and seek for help. This disorder is not a matter of will, and going out of this alone is difficult. Nowadays we can count on support groups in many countries, look for your local group and give it a try. Most important is to find a medical guidance. Make sure you tell your doctor your actual concerns. Probably the doctor will tell you to ask for an appointment with a psychologist; he or she will help you to reorganize your activities and talking about your feelings will make a big difference. Just make sure you feel comfortable with them (doctor, psychologist and support group) and try to attach to treatment. A little piece of advice, when considering any consult, is to feel comfortable with your health professional, because otherwise treatment will fail and you’ll be right where you started. Don’t give up! If you have any specific concerns please feel free to ask. Have a wonderful week!! Next post: Bigorexia and orthorexia

![]() Bulimia Nervosa This week is time to talk about bulimia nervosa. Bulimia Nervosa is a disorder that is basically characterized by two things: compulsive overeating (binging) plus a compensative period (purging). It is important to distinguish between bulimia and cumpulsive overeating. To identify bulimia it’s necessary that a person first has an overeating episode in wich he or she eats a massive amount of food (more than a normal person can take) in a brief period of time, and a following episode in which he or she abuses of laxatives, stops eating for a long time (fasting) or, the in most cases, induces vomiting in order to compensate binge eating.
After an binge episode, the person tends to feel guilty and depressed, so will try to do anything in his or her power to loose those recently added calories by purging. The are two types of bulimia: purging type and non-purging type. In the purging type people use laxatives or self induces vomiting, this is the most common type of bulimia. In the non-purging type, people uses other techniques like fasting and over exercising
Causes of bulimia nervosa are very similar to anorexia nervosa: a deficient genetic structure, an unhealthy enviroment and some personality characteristics (like poor body image), plus dieting and restrictive eating in this particular case. This is important because when we start a fitness plan to loose wheight, we are committed to change, unfortunately if we fail, it is common and normal to feel a bit disappointed. It is risky when anxiety takse place and we start eating more that we normaly do, even if we weren’t on a plan, and we try to do crazy stuff to get rid of those calories. In case of anorexia nervosa, the person does not necessarily need to loose weight when the problem starts, in case of bulimia, being overweight and trying to loose some pounds is a risk factor. Bulimia nervosa is very hazardous to health because of the extreme actions bulimics take. This actions like vomiting or abusing of laxatives, can easyly kill a person. The damage done to body’s metabolism and gastric system might be irreversible and cause death. I found this picture on the Internet that depicts very well some of the effects of bulimia, when purging is involved:
As any other disorder this has to be identified during the first alert signs. Symptoms of this disorders are progressive, probably someone with bulimia started getting obsessed with their weight, then anxiety led him or her to binge eating until gaining some weight and then started purging uncontrollably. So it is very important to seek for help if you think you are loosing control in the way you eat. You can talk to your health care provider is you feel you might have any of these symptoms so you can sort the best way out of the problem. Treatment for bulimia includes psychotherapy, pharmacologic therapy and nutritional advice, along with medical follow up. Hope you find this information useful. Have a great week!! Next week: compulsive overeating and binge eating disorder.

![]() Hi!!! The main reason of this blog it to talk about motivation so I wanted to start talking about self-esteem and self-image. This are not easy topics so I’m trying to make them clear and easy to understand, but, most important, to make them feel motivating. Since it’s getting harder to blog as I’m at the end of my semester at school, I haven’t finished my post yet so I decided to post a serial of topics I consider very important when following a fitness plan. I will briefly talk about eating disorders or (since some are not only related to food) fitness disorders. This problems happen more often that we might think and sometimes remain unnoticed until it’s too late. The disorders I shall expose are: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, orthorexia nervosa, bigorexia, compulsive overeating and binge eating disorder. Hope you find this information useful and I will be happy to answer your questions or personal concerns. Anorexia Nervosa Anorexia means no appetite and it’s a common symptom of many disorders that also happens as consequence of some meds. when we refer to anorexia nervosa we are talking about a whole set of symptoms that refers to an illness itself. It’s a very common eating disorder in where the person gets obsessed with weight and does everything possible to keep it low, like using drugs to loose weight, taking laxatives or inducing vomiting and avoid eating. In this disorder, social conditions go hand-in-hand with physical and genetic conditions. When the person accepts all cultural stereotypes of beauty and these don’t match their own body image, deals with a family with weight problems (overweight or underweight) and with an environment that constantly requires a low weight, along with certain personality characteristics and a deficient brain and genetic structure, is more likely to have anorexia and any other eating disorder.
This disorder leads to different types of health problems. An anorexic girl is anxious all the time and fears of her weight, gets easily depressed, can be so undernourished that her hair falls off, her skin gets dry and stained, she gets cognitive impairment (diminished memory and attention processes), as well as muscle impairment and dysmenorrhea (loss of her menstrual period). Although this disorder is more common among women also happens among men, but remains hidden for longer. If not controlled on time, can be deadly. Many models in the beginning of their careers have died from this disorder in which a person loose so much weight that they don’t even look like humans. Treatments for anorexia include psycologycal therapy, pharmacology therapy and some authors have even consider brain surgery to change body image. Either case treatment includes nutrition advice and medical follow. The most important is to identify anorexia (and any other disorder) on it’s early stages because the more the illness grows the more difficult to treat it becomes. If you think a friend of yours or you might have any of these symptoms (or symptoms of any other eating disorder) do not hesitate and ask for help to a health professional, know that this are social and medical problems that happen a lot in western cultures and have a treatment. You are not alone!
Next week I will talk about bulimia nervosa. Have a great weekend!!

![]() I’m sorry I don’t drop a line a little more often. Lately many things have been going on at school plus last weekend was my sister’s b-day and we arrange a party at home. We had some ham and cheese snacks as well as cocktails and a whole 33L barrel of beer. Everything looked delicious but… what about my strong and unbreakable fitness plan??Was I supposed to say no to everything I help putting together??? Not at all!! Here are some tips I followed (and you can easily follow too) when going to a party.
1—-Before Plan what you want to eat and drink. In the case of my sis’ party I knew everything we would serve so I was able to decide how much would I consume. I chose, according to my calorie tracking plan, to have 1 beer, two cocktails, and two times serving at the ham plate. That’d be it (and that was successfully it!).
But it is not easy to know when you go to a friend’s party so try to plan guessing on what will be served. It is always useful to write down how many calories do your favorite cocktails or drinks have and choose a number of each. This will keep you from going over you calorie limits and overdrinking. With food this may be hard because trying to guess about what will be served it’s almost impossible so you have two options: Ask your friend what will be served or (these is the easy one:)
have a healthy fulfilling snack before going to the party. Attending a party or a dinner party with an empty stomach will just result in overeating, overdrinking or will be torturous for the entire night if you try to stick to your plan. This snack may contain some fruit and a peanut butter sandwich or some veggies with some cheese on them, a little fat will help you feel full for longer. 2—-During
Distribute your chosen drinks along the night and stay away from sweet soda. Sometimes it’s hard to say no when a drink is being offered to us especially if your friends have their glasses on hand.
Prefer water or soda water. You can find gassy water in most parties so prefer it rather than regular soda (coke, lemon-lime, etc.) If you don’t like it that plain, add some lime and (if your plan allows you to) a bit of salt, this will make a very tasty drink! You can always have a sweet trait so try to drink only light soda but don’t abuse of it. Drink small gulps and avoid keeping your glass in hand all the time, try to keep it on the table (but in sight, you know, as a precaution especially on discotheques) Stick to your previous choices at most!! Let’s Dance!
My sister hired a DJ and we had music all night long and danced along. If there’s a dancing floor try to use it all the night. The most important about dancing is to have fun and express yourself; it doesn’t matter you don’t know how to dance, just don’t stop moving!! Remember to stay hydrated (with water or even ice). 3 —–After If you successfully followed these tips you will only have to enjoy all the good memories. But if you didn’t… don’t worry either!! You can always workout a bit (very important, just a bit) more in the gym the next day and always remember to go back to your plan. If you are a party person and go to parties a few times per week you will easy dominate these steps practicing but if you’re not, don’t worry if you drank or ate a bit more than expected; one night (just one night) will do no harm. The most important thing is to have a great time!!! ‘Till next time and have an awesome weekend!!

![]() Hi Everyone!! As I’m getting started as a blogger to this site, I will talk about getting started for a new fitness plan. When we start a new fitness plan, we star with a lot of enthusiasm. However, as time goes by, we get bored, tired o we just quit because we don’t see the desired results. This is due to a lot of bad decisions that we make, but this is not our fault anyway, we just don’t know. 2. – Establish realistic goals 3. – Get organized
One of the reasons why people leave their fitness plan is because it becomes incompatible with their daily life activities. This incompatibility is due to we are not organized. Increasing events to our already tight agenda implies to make new changes that not always need to be so radical. Take a small walk for at least one minute every hour. This will not only help you to start a more active rhythm, but will keep stress out of the way. Organize your food times. I’m not the one to tell what is to be done in a fitness plan, but certainly I can tell how to manage it. Most plans require you to eat five times a day. Schedule those meals dividing your day by four, starting with breakfast. For example, if you have breakfast at seven and dinner at 9, then your day last 14 hours, if you divide it by four then you are going to have your meals every 3 and a half hours approximately. Shape Up club will help a lot with this issue. You can easily organize what you eat and how much you it. It is also very important since many people lose weight just by realizing how much do they eat. 4. – Join your friends or communities
Having social support is also very useful. Having someone to go jogging with or dinning out with, who is in your same situation will help a lot. If you don’t have anyone, don’t worry, go and find those people. It’s not that hard, there are many online communities, like the one at Shape Up Club, that can help you to keep motivated by sharing experiences. Or it is always helpful to follow Sarah’s advice and join a health club or a class, you’ll find that you will have a lot more things in common with them than what you have thought!!
This could sound very challenging and ambitious but it’s the best beginning. Think positive, always, and stay focused on what you want to achieve. THINK HEALTHY!, this is the only body you have.
Have a Great Week!!!
